  • A council record not showing your licence isn’t proof you’re unlicensed

A missing council licence record doesn’t automatically mean you’ve committed a licensing offence.

Many landlords panic when a tenant claims their property wasn’t licensed because the council’s online register shows nothing.

But online records aren’t always complete or up to date.

If you held a valid licence, or submitted a valid licence application during the relevant period, the evidence could significantly affect your defence.

Before accepting an allegation, make sure the facts are properly checked.
