“For the first time ever, all homes in the Private Rented Sector will have to meet a minimum standard – the Decent Homes Standard” states the Government’s Minister for Levelling Up etc Micheal Gove as he launches his new White Paper.
The government will announce a plan that Section 21 ‘no fault’ evictions will further be abolished, ending the unfair situation where renters can be kicked out of their homes for no reason.
We will consult on introducing a landlords register, and will set out plans for a crackdown on rogue landlords – making sure fines and bans stop repeat offenders leaving renters in terrible conditions.
Gove has also announced that there will be the “Biggest shift of power from Whitehall to local leaders in modern times announced – every part of England to get ‘London style’ powers and mayor if they wish to.”
Commenting, Phil Turtle, compliance director with Landlord Licensing & Defence said, “This should be the biggest wake-up call for landlords. It is good that there may finally be some comprehensible minimum standards for rental property instead of the current guess and guess again system.
“But landlords should be petrified that councils and local authorities, the unaccountable, revenue driven and merciless housing police are to be give even more powers to destroy landlords. Particularly given Gove’s reinforcement of the belief that Fines and Bans are the way to ensure Landlords provide decent quality homes.”
Landlords that are not 100% certain their properties meet HHSRS, Fire Risk and council amenity standards should get a assessment by qualified HHSRS and fire risk assessment professionals if they want to stay safe from persecution by the already aggressive council housing enforcement “police”. https://landlordsdefence.co.uk/hhsrs-risk-assessment/
